In the area of seafarer welfare and social security, guided by its vision, the NUSS is in constant dialogue and working closely and cordially with several reputed local shipping/ manning agents who are representing some of the reputed international shipping companies organized in the International Maritime Employers Committee (IMEC). The “National Union of Seafarers Trust of Sri Lanka (NUSTS) is a Trust set up and incorporated explicitly to take care of seafarer social security and welfare. This trust is jointly administered by a six-member Board of Trustees (BOT) comprising three trustees from the NUSS and three from local Shipping/Manning companies nominated by IMEC. The trust provides benefits exclusively to those who are covered by Collective Bargaining Agreements entered into by NUSS.

Welfare & social security benefits are:

  • Reimbursement of healthcare costs: the cost of surgery and routine outpatient medical treatment incurred by members /their spouses for themselves or their children (minors)
  • Dental Facility Covered (only for member)
  • Compulsory savings (to be released on retirement)
  • Life assurance cover for member seafarers
